A Kist Built on Craft

The Ubuciko Kist takes its name from craftsmanship itself. Ubuciko means the skill of making something well, and this kist carries that in its joinery rather than in any hide or upholstery. Where the rest of the range leans on genuine cowhide, this one leans on the wood and the brass alone.

It is a plainer proposition, and a classic one. A flat solid wood lid, three raised front panels, and hardware finished the old way. It sits as comfortably as a coffee table as it does at the foot of a bed.

Solid Wood, Polished by Hand

Each kist is built from solid timber, panel by panel, then polished to a deep, high gloss by hand. The mahogany tone runs true through the wood rather than sitting on top of it, so the finish will not wear thin the way a veneer does. Corners are reinforced, not just glued, so the kist holds its shape under daily use for years.

The base stands on turned bun feet, a detail borrowed from classic chest-making rather than the plainer block feet used elsewhere in the range. It is a small difference that changes how the whole piece reads.

Brass, Not Hide

Two ornate brass drop handles sit on the side panels, cast in a leaf-and-filigree pattern rather than a plain bar. A brass keyhole plate and working lock sit at the front, the traditional way to close a kist, turned by a key rather than left open on a hasp.

There is no hide anywhere on this piece. What carries it instead is the joinery and the hardware, finished with the same care the rest of the range puts into a cowhide lid.

Built to Last, Plainly

The Ubuciko Kist is sealed against everyday knocks the same way the rest of the range is, and finished to stand up to daily use rather than sit as a display piece. Wipe the wood down with a dry or lightly damp cloth, and keep it out of direct, harsh sunlight to protect the polish over time.

It is the simplest kist in the range, but simple is not the same as unfinished. Built the slow way, it should still be standing long after cheaper wood has warped or split.
