A Kist Built on Cattle

The Inkomo Kist takes its name from the cattle that gave it its lid. Inkomo means cattle, and cattle sit at the centre of what a kist like this is for, long before any ceremony begins. This is a plainer kist than the others in the range, and that is deliberate. No lock, no drawers, just solid wood and a single unbroken hide.

It is sized to store blankets, linen, or whatever a household chooses to keep close. The kist does not need hardware to make its point. The hide does that on its own.

Solid Wood, Three Panels

Each kist is built from solid timber, panel by panel, then finished entirely by hand. The front carries three raised panels for structure and depth, the same construction that runs through the rest of the Isiko range. Corners are reinforced, not just glued, so the kist holds its shape under daily use for years.

The finish is a deep espresso tone, dark enough to let the hide on top do the talking. Light sits differently on solid wood than it does on veneer, and this kist is built from the real thing throughout.

One Hide, Not Pieced

Where the rest of the range uses hide as an accent, the Inkomo Kist is upholstered in a single full hide across the entire lid, black and white, edge to edge. No two hides pattern alike, so no two kists read the same. That is the nature of working with the genuine article rather than a printed substitute.

A dark metal loop handle sits centred on the front face, solid enough to help lift the kist when it needs to move. There is no lock on this piece. It is built for the home, not for anything that needs securing.

Built to Last, Kept Simple

The Inkomo Kist is finished the same way the rest of the range is: sealed against everyday knocks, standing on a moulded plinth that lifts it clear of damp floors. Wipe the wood down with a dry or lightly damp cloth.

Treat the hide the way you would treat any natural hide. Wipe it clean rather than scrub it, and keep it out of direct, harsh sunlight so the pattern holds its depth over time. Simple as it is, it is still built the slow way, and it should still be standing long after simpler pieces have been replaced.
