The Isiko Kist is a solid wood lobola kist. It is made for ceremonies that matter, and for years long after them. It carries weight without shouting about it. Every joint is built to hold, not just to hold up.

This is not a decorative box. It is a working kist, sized to store blankets, linen, or the gifts exchanged on the day itself. The dark, hand-rubbed finish deepens with age. It does not wear thin the way painted furniture does.

Solid Wood, Hand-Finished

Each kist is built from solid timber, panel by panel, then finished entirely by hand. The front carries three raised panels for structure and depth, echoed again on the side panels. Corners are reinforced, not just glued, so the kist holds its shape under daily use for years.

The finish is a deep, near-black mahogany tone, applied in layers and hand-rubbed between coats. Light catches the grain differently at every angle. No two kists finish exactly alike, because no two boards grain exactly alike either. That variation is part of owning solid wood, not a flaw in it.

A Lid Made to Be Noticed

Lift the lid, and the first thing you notice is the seat. A cushioned panel is set into the top and upholstered in genuine cowhide. Closed, the kist doubles comfortably as a bench or a low seat by the door. The hide pattern is natural. Every kist carries a slightly different marking, so no two lids read quite the same.

The lock is old-world by design. A cast brass plate and hasp sit at the front. The finish matches the timber tone rather than fighting it. Two drop handles sit on the sides. They are solid enough to lift the kist by, not just decorative fittings bolted on for show.

Built to Travel Through Generations

Every surface is sealed against everyday knocks and everyday use. The base sits on a moulded plinth, lifting the kist clear of damp floors. Wipe it down with a dry or lightly damp cloth. Keep it out of direct, harsh sunlight to protect the finish over time.
